29 Inch mountain bikes (or 29ers) have become incredibly popular in the past decade. Historically 26 inch and 27.5 were the popular choice but with changes to frame design and modern geometry, 29er's are the choice of wheel size for most riders. With their larger tyres, 29ers have the ability to rollover rocks and smaller obstacles more easily, carrying significantly more speed and providing additional cornering grip. As they do use a larger wheel, shorter riders will occasionally find this too large and opt for 27.5 or 26 inch wheel size mountain bikes.
